Here’s my recipe for a good night’s sleep:
Keep lights dim at night before bedtime
If you don’t have a dimmer, here’s a perfect excuse to light candles. You don’t have to wait until the power goes out to set a restful (or romantic) mood. I like to line the hallway with little tea lights and have candles by my bedside. Less light at night helps me tune my inner clock to the rhythm of rest.
Unplug
On the night’s that I stay up late on the computer I am WIRED and way too buzzy to be able to sleep. Hubby helps by reminding me to shut down after 8pm–no computer, no phone, no ipad. If you’re really bad about this, put a reminder or alarm on your calendar. Now that should do it!
All light’s off at bedtime

Decaffeinate
I do my best to avoid caffeine after 2pm. Although the cup of green tea after dinner seems really enticing, I always pay the price later when I lie in bed staring at the ceiling. Chocolate tends to be even more enticing…
No TV in the Bedroom
Feng Shui expert, Katy from Feng Shui by Fish Girl says TV, cell phones, radio alarm clocks from the bedroom are bad feng shui:
“By moving your TV out to the living room or den, you will be making a very big Feng Shui improvement (and may just perk up your love life, too).”
Declutter
I tend to make little messes a lot. For me it takes a lot of discipline to keep things neat. Cluttered bedroom = cluttered head. Clean empty space is like having room to breathe. I pick up clothes and even spend a moment planning tomorrow’s outfit. Things are put away and life will be that much easier for me when I wake up.
Relax and unwind
Here’s a relaxing and restful guided meditation to help you unwind before bed.
How about you? What are your special ingredients for a restful night’s sleep?

Nice article! Thanks for mentioning my site. Another good tip for a restful night’s sleep is diet…no sugar or caffeine after 6PM, avoid alcohol as it will wake you up, and make sure you are hydrated with water but stop drinking it around 8PM unless you specifically want to wake up to remember dreams.

No sugar or caffeine after 6. This sounds very smart. I notice that sugar definitely makes my energy spike and dive and leaves me spacey or edgy. I’d much rather experience the even-keeled calm that helps me sleep well. Thank you Feng Shui By Fishgirl!
